Born in 1940 in Sabzevar, Iran, Dowlatabadi who has an international reputation is a master of combining rural speech with the lyrical feature of Persian poetry.
He is particularly gifted in portraying the social and moral difficulties of the poor specially in rustic areas where he has himself lived.
His key works such as ‘Kelidar’; ‘The Colonel’ and ‘Missing Soluch’ were translated into Norwegian, German, English, Italian and have been released in the West.
Dowlatabadi received the prestigious France’s Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2014 at a ceremony attended by the French ambassador to Tehran Bruno Foucher and several Iranian scholars.
The writer has won the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature for the novel, ‘The Colonel,’ in 2013; Chevalier of the Legion of Honor from the French government in 2014; 20 Years of Fiction of the Islamic Revolution award in 1998; the Yalda Literary Prize for a lifetime of literary achievement in 2002; and he was a Man Booker Prize nominee for his novel, ‘The Colonel,’ in 2012.
